Testosterone testing allows us to assess the testosterone level in the body. Allowing us to gauge the level of androgen deficiency, and plan for androgen deficiency treatment.
Testosterone is produced by the male testis, and then reversibly bound to the blood transport proteins: sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin. This bound form then circulates in the blood, facilitating the distribution of the hormone throughout the body. At the peripheral tissues, where the hormone concentration is lower, the testosterone is released from the transport protein to exert its androgenic effects throughout the entire body.
It is the free form of testosterone that is responsible for exerting the androgenic effects on the body. In order to calculate the free testosterone level, the levels of the sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin must also be measured. The values are then run through a formula to obtain the actual free testosterone level.
Testosterone has a diurnal rhythm, with a peak at around 0800H, and a trough at around 2000H. References ranges are calibrated to the morning peak value. Mondays to Fridays are the days that the clinic is open in the morning for your testosterone testing. On the night before, from 10 pm onwards, please fast till the next morning. 9 to 10 am would be a good time to arrive at the clinic to have a consultation, and your blood sampling done.
